qiscus Hack Tip: How to Auto Follow Up After Networking With Zapier
Network network network
We all know that networking is a very crucial part of every business. In the book 10x Rule, the biggest problem about new businesses isn’t about competition. It is obscurity. If nobody knows you, competition does not matter.
At qiscus, we’ve been hitting networking events regularly. We set this deal where we try to get 50 coffee meet ups in 50 days. But the problem is not during the networking event or the coffee meet up but the follow up that comes after.
But it can be such a pain to follow up
I’m quite sure many would face the same problem when you have back to back meetings all day, following up with everyone after is such a pain. Most of the time, I wish that I’ve got an intern or a secretary with whom I can just ask to follow up with the people I met professionally.
Unfortunately, we don’t have the budget to hire someone to do that. But being the hackers that we’re suppose to be, we cracked our brains and found something that is as nifty as having a secretary to do everything else.
"This hack will automatically forward your new networking contacts a follow up email by just adding their details in your mobile phone.”
I’ll show you how below. :)
You need a Zapier account. Zapier is a web application makes it easy to automate tasks between other web apps. There’s an alternative in IFFFT but we’ll cover this on another day.
Relax, we’re extremely frugal and thankfully Zapier offer free plans. Here’s the list of pricing plans offered by Zapier. I’m using the free service for now.
The next step is to make a zap!
Choose Google Contacts as the trigger service and Gmail as the action service.
Then choose New Contact and Send Email respectively. There are other services that you can try out but for this zap we’ll just focus on Google Contacts and Gmail.
The next two steps is to make sure that your mail is connected to Zapier.
For this, choose the Google Contact account that you normally would add your contacts to.
And choose the email account that you would like your emails to be sent our from. If the account is connected successfully, you’ll see “Account is working”.
Step 4 - [Super Important!]
Now it will be very weird if you added your personal contacts to your phone and it automatically zap a formal networking email follow up.
To avoid this, I created a new group called Networking and I tell Zapier to only trigger when I select the Networking group upon adding a new contact.
You can easily add a new category by going to Google Contacts and add new category on the left sidebar panel; right at the bottom.
The last step is quite cool. Here you can configure to the auto-emailer to populate details from your Google Contact. This makes it easier to personalize your email to such an extent that it really feels as though you are sending the email out yourself.
The comment field is where you put your notes on the person in your Google Contacts. You can also auto populate other fields of the person such as web url and so on.
How it looks like on the receiving party?
After that you could run some tests and here’s what it looks like on the receiving party. Very neat right?
I’m raring to go network with more people now!
Now, there’s no reason for you not to follow up with someone within 24 hours of meeting them.
Let me know if this works for you and do put in your versions of auto reply that you think would be useful for everyone else!
Just put it in the comment box below.
